A change of address for Charles A. Cunningham, Jr., 93, of Marshfield, came November 10, 2015 when he began walking streets of gold with his Savior, Jesus, his wife of 72 years, Anna Lee, his parents, Charles A. Cunningham, Sr. and Grace Ellen Nichols Cunningham, and two infant brothers. Numerous other family and friends also welcome him home.
Charles was born in Ashland/Sapp, Missouri, November 30, 1921. He graduated from Hickman High in Columbia, Missouri in 1939, working at a Kroger Store. He married the love of his life, Anna Lee, November 9, 1941 in Boonville, Missouri. They loved their family beyond measure, loved life, and made the best of every situation. Ann passed into glory May 13, 2014.
Charles served and protected our country in the U.S. Navy and was a WW II veteran. At a young age, he learned and taught the value of hard work. Most of Charles life was in the grocery business. They owned grocery stores in Macon, Keytesville, and Hamilton, Missouri. At age 62 he retired as Member Service Supervisor from Associated Grocers of Springfield.
Charles and Ann made their home in Kansas City, Columbia, Hannibal, Macon and Branson, before moving to Marshfield in 1989. They loved camping, fishing, traveling and escaping Missouri winters in a warmer climate…most of all they loved family.
Charles had great pride and love in their children and families: Linda (Retired Judge Donald) Cheever; Senator Mike Cunningham; Hephzibah Sue Cunningham, all of Marshfield; and Kay Tate of Strafford. Counted as special blessings are 10 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. He especially delighted the little ones.
Charles had a strong positive spirit. He was a champion over multiple cancers, heart issues and an amputee, but never let any of it get him down. He had a zest for life. His many other character traits were love, generosity, loyalty, compassion, kindness, and unselfishness.
He made friends everywhere he went. His love for people was strong and he loved bringing sunshine and joy to all the lives he had the pleasure of touching.
At this time of year, their generosity shined bright. Through the years they blessed family after family with food, clothing and charitable gifts and donations. Charles has requested that donations of canned goods be left at Fraker Funeral Home to bless others.
Charles and his family respectfully request that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Autism Foundation and Barnes Children’s Hospital in honor of Charles grandchildren. They can be left or mailed to Fraker Funeral Home, P.O. Box 85, Marshfield, Mo. 65706
The celebration of Charles life began after life ended and will continue at Fraker Funeral Home, Marshfield on Tuesday, November 17. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. with celebration services at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Terrance Stewart, grandson-in-law. His body will be laid to rest at 2:00 p.m. in Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield.
